Formula 1’s youngest race winner Max Verstappen set the pace on the final day of the first Formula 1 in-season test at Barcelona.

The Red Bull driver clocked a 1m23.267s on the soft tyres before lunch and that remained unbeaten for the remainder of the day.

Verstappen finished 0.739s ahead of McLaren’s Stoffel Vandoorne with Pascal Wehrlein in the Mercedes a tenth further back.

Wehrlein was a late replacement for Mercedes DTM racer and Renault F1 reserve Esteban Ocon, after the team decided it needed a more experienced driver to test new parts.

Mercedes said Lewis Hamilton had other standing commitments while Wehrlein was already on-site as he is staying in Spain for a Manor team filming day.

Esteban Gutierrez was fourth quickest for Haas with Ferrari’s academy driver Antonio Fuoco fifth, one of eight drivers to complete more than 100 laps.

Toro Rosso’s Daniil Kvyat, who finished sixth quickest, caused the second red flag of the day when he stopped on track between Turns 4 and 5.

Manor’s Jordan King was responsible for the first red flag after he ran wide at Turn 7, dragging gravel onto the track that required cleaning.

Alfonso Celis Jr bolted on a set of super-soft tyres with a few minutes to go to clock the seventh quickest time in the Force India.

Kevin Magnussen was eighth quickest reporting the drivability of the new Renault engine is better than the old specification.

Felipe Massa ran Williams’s radical rear wing as the team continued gathering data for the 2017 aerodynamic rules overhaul. He was ninth fastest with Manor’s Jordan King propping up the timesheets.
