V8 Supercars

Young gun and form qualifier Chaz Mostert has topped the final Friday practice at Queensland Raceway, the place where he earned his first V8 Supercars win back in 2013.

The Pepsi Max Crew racer predicted the 3.12km ‘paperclip’ circuit would suit his speedy FG X, and while he still believes there’s more to squeeze out of it with small tweaks, was very happy with the Falcon that produced a 1min09.4881 fast lap.

His time, set on the soft Dunlop tyre, was 0.345sec quicker than Supercheap Auto Racing’s Tim Slade, with early fast man Scott McLaughlin in third position.

“The second last run we chucked some softs on, so it’s good to see,” Mostert said.

“We ran on hards most of the day… the car’s brilliant, probably just needs a tune up here and there.”

He revealed the team had a third set of hard tyres up their sleeve to use in one of the weekend’s upcoming races.

“We were strong on hard tyre all day – we only used two sets of hards all the day, still another set for Sat or Sunday to run … happy with the car, we tweaked it and went well.”

Erebus’ Will Davison was on top early in the session, after a good showing in practice one, with Jamie Whincup also popping up the times midway.

There was a red flag intervention for Dale Wood and Scott Pye had an unusual off at the end of the session at the final corner.

Others to note include Craig Lowndes in 10th, Whincup 12th and Championship leader Mark Winterbottom in 17th.

There will be a final practice session tomorrow at the Coates Hire Ipswich SuperSprint before back-to-back qualifying and two 60km races. The second qualifying session and race will be contested on soft tyres, the first on hards.
