Fabian Coulthard is now the fastest man in a V8 Supercar at Phillip Island, having not just broken the lap record but recording a time in the 1min31 bracket.

The Lockwood racer set a 1min31.8883 in his Holden Commodore in Practice Two – the first session open for all 28 drivers at the Sargent Security Phillip Island 360 – in the last few minutes on track.

Craig Lowndes held the previous qualifying record, a 1min32.0713 achieved back in 2000.

Michael Caruso and his Nissan Altima had held the top time for most of the session, but was reduced to second 0.1525 seconds adrift, with Mark Winterbottom in third.

Chaz Mostert, Lowndes, Todd Kelly, David Reynolds, Tony D’Alberto, Tim Slade and Will Davison completed the top 10.

Others to note include Jamie Whincup in 19th, Jason Bright 21st, Shane van Gisbergen 22nd and Garth Tander 25th. Bright, van Gisbergen and Tander are still mathematically in contention for the Championship – though the real battle is between the top four, 121 points apart; with Coulthard an outside chance, 396 points away from leader Lowndes.

Van Gisbergen had a small off-track excursion near the Hayshed, but the team has reported no issues with his VIP Petfoods Commodore.

The final practice session for the day begins at 2.20pm local time. Another session will kick off tomorrow’s action, ahead of Qualifying and the final 60/60 Super Sprint race.
