Hélio Castroneves led the fifth day of practice for the Indianapolis 500 with the fastest time of the month.
The Penske driver recorded a best effort of 227.166 mph (39.6186 seconds) at the end of the day’s action, placing him 0.1591 seconds ahead of Ed Carpenter, who had moved to the front of the field 15 minutes earlier.
“The draft counts a lot here and I feel very confident, so we will keep going and keep working,” said Castroneves.
“I really like what I have, but on Friday we will go to the boost and you are going to see big numbers up there, too. So we are really looking forward to the next day of practice to see those numbers keep going higher.”
Penske’s Will Power followed in third, edging out Townsend Bell (KV) and Ryan Hunter-Reay (Andretti).
James Davison and Buddy Lazier made their first appearances of the week for KV and Lazier Partners Racing respectively, while Andretti’s James Hinchcliffe – who had been suffering from concussion after being struck by debris in the recent Indianapolis road race – was cleared to return to action by the IndyCar medical team.
